Lichen & Moss
Mel Phillips
Mel has spent years immersed in the world of botanical inks and paints, developing a deep, hands-on understanding of the colours that nature yields. That passion recently blossomed into Lichen & Moss, her own small business dedicated to handcrafted natural pigments and dyes. Since discovering the quiet alchemy of working with plant-based colour, she has turned away from synthetic mediums entirely — her own artwork now made exclusively with the pigments she prepares herself. The greatest satisfaction, she finds, comes from paint made entirely from plants and trees foraged close to home: a process that roots her practice firmly in the landscape around her.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to extract and filter natural pigments from botanical matter, before grinding them into paints using a muller and gum Arabic. You’ll leave with a collection of beautiful, ready-to-use colours housed in clay pots — and the knowledge and confidence to continue making your own natural paints long after the workshop ends.
